Mari Nicolson
A practicing artist, educator, writer and workshop presenter for over 20 years, Mari has a wide variety of experience in the understanding, appreciation and creation of artforms. Though media and format may change and evolve over time, her main interests continue to revolve around introspection and the bizarre experience of every day existence. The wide variety of people, ideas, and ephemera that she comes into contact with are an ongoing influence, and many materials found in the works have been collected on her travels.
Many of the themes found in her work have also arisen through her graduate studies in visual culture and fine arts, and the connections that continue to form between ourselves and the world around us.
Mari’s encaustic and resin series’ are a combination raw silk, handmade Japanese papers, antique stamps, birch bark, and much more. The resin is impervious to water, alcohol, heat and dust, and the encaustic medium is made by hand out of the highest quality pure beeswax, damar crystals and fine powdered pigments. This ensures the longevity of the work, and guarantees that it will not fog, crack or become less vibrant over time. The encaustic process dates back thousands of years, and has not only a beautiful surface and feel to it, but the paintings smell good!
Mari also accepts commissions for acrylic or collaged portraiture, custom abstracts, and glass-work, and is available for consultation on art purchases or informative lectures on a variety of topics.
