RHGA Donna Vacca
Mary Kapogiannis

Mary was raised in a strict European immigrant family whose parents like everyone else's came to Canada with nothing but limited funds, many hopes and wanted their children to be good scholars and citizens. As a child she did not dare speak of becoming an artist as that was considered a leisurely activity rather than a decent skill and therefore followed a conventional education path studying business at Ryerson.

However, as an adult Mary knew that art was an area she wanted to pursue. Being of inquisitive nature, she has attended numerous classes and workshops exploring various art techniques; however in the last few years she has concentrated on producing works in oils and acrylics. Being a "closet artist" for many years she is now exhibiting her work throughout the community. It has brought her great freedom to produce and exhibit her work aside some very notable artists.

Mary believes: "Weather art be canvas, paper, marble, iron, bronze, or any other medium it can offer an infinite number of reflections. Art has the ability to break through barriers of language, culture, gender, young and old, ill or healthy. It can capture the pleasant or stir unpleasant emotions; evoke thoughts of struggle or freedom. From organic to organic, that is the beauty of art.”
